Status: OPEN

The renowned ENGINE Short Film Scheme is back for a 3rd Edition, with the call now open for emerging filmmakers based in Clare, Tipperary or Limerick to join the training programme, which will commission up to six new short films in the region in 2025. Shortlisted teams join the training programme to develop their project ideas and up to six teams are awarded production funding of €12,500 each to produce a short film locally.

The ambitious short film training and production scheme for emerging talent has already produced 12 films over the first two editions, and seen commissioned films screened globally, picking up awards in London, Belfast, Chicago and screening at the famous SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Run by Innovate Limerick through Film in Limerick, Engine Shorts is a partnership between the Local Authorities in Tipperary, Limerick and Clare, and Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.

The new scheme aims to inspire and support up-and-coming writers, directors and producers to create inspiring, engaging world-class short films that resonate with a wide international audience.

It will also offer the opportunity for emerging local crew to gain real-world experience on funded productions and to receive industry guidance.

Two films from county Tipperary creatives were funded for production in the 2nd Edition of Engine Short Film Scheme in 2024. The first film ‘Bog’ is written by Beverly Penn from Thurles and was filmed in Newport and Roscrea. The second film ‘Heart of Stone’ is written by Roseanna Purcell from Littleton and was filmed in Thurles.

The Engine Shorts initiative is a key mechanism for developing filmmaking talent in the Mid-West of Ireland, supporting skills and talent development through industry-led training, as well as tailored training and practical experience for crews on commissioned projects.

The commissioned projects are all filmed in the region, crewed by locally-based talent and offer skills training and career development for all those involved.

Speaking about the 3rd edition launch, Paul C. Ryan, Regional Film manager at Film in Limerick, said, “Engine Shorts has established itself as an important talent and company development initiative for the Irish film and TV sector. We have already seen huge success with the films produced and more importantly, writers, producers and directors are gaining vital experience in story development and in working with executives and crew to expand their abilities and ambitions. We are sowing the seeds here to support creatives who will produce longer format projects and make the Mid-West of Ireland an important hub for film and TV production. If you have big ambitions as a filmmaker, this is your sign, apply now!”

Melanie Scott, Arts Officer at Tipperary County Council said; “We are delighted to join with our partners in Limerick and Clare once again for the 3rd edition of Engine Shorts. Tipperary has a long track record of producing film talent and as a base for many high-profile productions - including Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel starring Matt Damon. We look forward to seeing more local filmmakers developing their own stories in the county."

Frequency: Annual

Status: OPEN

Closing Date: 12 noon, Thursday, 6th February 2025

Tipperary County Council invites applications from organisations/organisers planning Festivals and Events to take place in County Tipperary in 2025.

Festivals and events are central to the fabric of life in County Tipperary and deliver a range of economic, social and cultural benefits. They entertain, they celebrate our communities, showcase our villages and towns and are often an expression of identity and place. They represent arts, cultural, heritage and sporting assets and make a positive contribution in influencing the perception of County Tipperary.

Tipperary County Council aims to promote and support local festivals and events that are not solely commercially focused throughout the County, to support and assist those events that have an artistic, community, heritage, sporting or tourism focus and which contribute significantly to quality of life.

Guidelines and application forms for the 2025 scheme are available below.

The Tipperary Festivals & Events Strategy defines Festivals and Events as follows:

Festival: A collection of events that celebrate a single or general theme and are promoted as one within this theme, occurring within a defined timeframe.

Event: A celebration, activity, exhibition or staged performance that is open to the general public for a limited time (not necessarily free of charge). An example of an event is a St Patrick's Day Parade, community show/day, community sports event, public exhibition or showcase.

*New and Emerging Festivals or Events

Applications from festivals and events which are new or emerging and show signs of future potential to develop and can demonstrate that they link in with the objectives of Tipperary County Council are encouraged. It is important that these festivals and events are supported as they will promote and encourage innovation and creativity and may have the potential to scale up over time to become premier events. The purpose of this category is to enable an event which emerges mid-year (after the festival deadline for that year) to seek support on an exceptional basis. A festival or event may only apply to this category in its first year of operation. Organisers of such events should contact artsoffice@tipperarycoco.ie to seek further information.
